In college, I was very impressed by Vincent van Gogh’s Starry Night. Usually he painted natural scenes. But, here he transformed onto canvas a tremendously exciting personal revelation.
It led me to wonder about the underlying emotion that could generate such an affective scene and to speculate about the subconscious process influencing his portrayal. More on what was an epiphany for me can be found on page 164 of the downloaded Memoir.
This caused me to consider how scholarship might provide a way to understand the process of interpretation. Subsequently, I’ve tried to pursue that kind of research throughout my career.
